Lent

So, lent is coming up and it is time again to think about how to 'fast' this year. Maybe it is just me, but I don't really see giving up chocolate or sodas as really giving up much. Maybe this is because I really don't partake in these things on a normal daily basis. So, over the course of lent, it really wouldn't bother me to give these up. Beyond this, how does this actually relate to turning towards God? I can't see me standing before God saying I gave up Coke and Hershey's. Why do I mention the soda and chocolate? Basically, these are to me the two most showy things that people I know tell me that they are doing for lent. I don't know what I will do for lent, but I hope to find something that will actually help me grow closer to God. Maybe I just like to multi-task.
I will TRY not to share what I am doing with others since I feel that this may be construed as being showy or bragging about having a better fast than others. On the other hand, that may keep me more to my promise.

Anyway, lent is coming. Are you ready?

High Fructose Corn Syrup

OK, so I haven't posted in a REAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLYY long time. Probably won't again, but we'll see.

I've been getting a little obsessed with High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) lately. After seeing the lovely commercials for HFCS basically stating that it is the same as sugar and that there is nothing wrong with it, I started to be concerned. Why do they need to defend themselves?

There are many things that HCFS may or may not do, but the basic problem that I have with it is that it is not natural. It is my best determination that anything 'not natural' can and probably is bad for you in some shape or form.

Food should just be grown naturally and eaten naturally, that is how I think God intended it. Once you stray away from that, I think that it is really screwing with the natural Godly order of things.

Anyways, I am trying to kick the HFCS habit. Not that I really have a big habit to kick. I eat mostly 'healthy' foods. Wheat, organic, etc. However, you will find the HFCS in the darndest places. Including Ketchup and any other type of condiment that you may want to use (except mustard which seems to be immune to the problem). That includes salad dressings. Or at least the major brands. Also, it appears that a lot of breads have HFCS including hot dog buns. There was only one at the local store that did not have HFCS last time we bought them.

BTW, it is in basically all cereals. It is in cough syrup, children's Tylenol, crackers, yogurt, ice cream, etc... The list goes on and on.

After purging my pantry this weekend for HFCS, I did not find much since we had already made the swich to organic food a while back for other reasons I won't go into right now. However, I will be on the look out for rogue foods with the HFCS!!
