Just flipping through a new book as I usually do, I find the following passage and I am immediately hooked by this book:
Is not fear one of the major causes of war? We say that war is a consequence of hate, but close scrutiny reveals this sequence: first fear, then hate, then war, and then finally deeper hatred. How awfully and painfully true. The only thing we really have to fear is fear itself. Why do we fight the wars we fight? FEAR.
I am sure I will write more on this book.

Thanks for your comment on my blog about the Golden Compass. The point about the war was an interesting one and I think a very important question.
I haven't read this MLK book, but I definitely will...there is so much that can be said about the culture of fear that is created in this country. It's tied not only to war but also to consumerism and even basic social stratification...I'll check that book out, sounds really good.
It is fear, indeed. Fear stemming from insecurity... Not being sure of our identity. I find it amazing that Jesus knowing who He was, was confident enough to "make Himself of no reputation..." (Philippians 2: 5-8)
