Courage to do Justice

From the UMC Hymnal:

O Lord,
open my eyes that I may see the needs of others;
open my ears that I may hear their cries;
open my heart so that they need not be without succor;
let me not be afraid to defend the weak because of the anger of the strong,
nor afraid to defend the poor because of the anger of the rich.
Show me where love and hope and faith are needed, and use me to bring them to those places.
And so open my eyes and my ears that I may this coming day be able to do some work of peace for thee. Amen.

I love this prayer. Thanks for your comment on my post; I haven't been updating the past few days because I just moved back to school, but I do hope to continue with the blog, so your encouragement is much appreciated. The MLK quote you shared is one I use often because it speaks to such a profound truth that is so often missed by people who think that if only we have more personal weapons, violence can be stopped. One thing that Bishop Peter Storey, from South Africa, said that stuck with me was this: "If you justify violence for any reason, no matter how good and noble, you legitimize it for every reason, no matter how wrong and unworthy."

Thanks for your comments and I wish you well. God bless.
